Straine Dental Management Buyer Map

Prepared for Kerry Straine | Straine Dental Management | October 2026

As of Oct 7, 2026. Counts from published federal statistics on US companies, dated in the notes at the foot

Straine sells analytics, consulting and management to dental practice owners nationwide, so this page maps US dental practice companies by the number of people the whole company employs. Your services page sells in three stages, and practice size is a simple way to see where each owner sits. It also counts the larger dental companies, since your story page names dental support organizations among your consulting clients. It says nothing about which practices Straine already works with.

They run about 10,000 offices between them.

Dental companies with 100 or more staff

Who decides

The people who usually decide on analytics, consulting or an affiliation, by size.

SegmentRoles
Practices under 20 staffThe owner dentist. The office manager often shapes the first conversation
Groups with 20 to 99 staffThe founding or managing dentist, the partners, and a practice administrator or director of operations
Dental companies with 100 or more staffThe chief operating officer, the finance lead, and the regional directors of operations

The 12 largest states

Dental practice companies with paid staff in each state, by the size of the whole company, 2022.

The first four columns count companies, the last counts offices. A company with offices in two states counts once in each state. General dentists and specialists are counted together. In Texas the total and the under 20 count both round to 10,000. The other states are in the national figures above.

Three openings

Where the counts point.

Practices with 10 to 19 staff.

About 25,000 practices nationally have 10 to 19 staff. A practice that size is busy enough for the numbers to stop adding up at month end, the problem your services page puts first under analytics, and the owner is still the person who decides.

Groups with 20 to 99 staff.

About 6,500 dental groups have 20 to 99 staff and run about 10,000 offices between them. One conversation with the managing dentist can cover several offices at once.

California, Texas and New York first.

These three states hold about 37,000 of the 110,000 practices under 20 staff in the country. A list worked state by state starts where the count is largest.

What no public count reaches

Three questions this page cannot answer from a count, said in words rather than shown as numbers.

Which owners are planning a transition. Retirement, a partner leaving or a sale is what starts the management and succession conversation, and no public count shows it. The named version lists the practices. Which owners are thinking about it shows only in conversation.

Which practices already have a partner. The last column counts offices owned by larger companies, but no public list says which of the smaller practices and groups have already signed with a support organization or a consultant.

Dental supply companies. Your story page also names work with dental supply companies. The public count groups dental suppliers with medical and hospital suppliers, so this page leaves them out rather than show a number that would mislead.

Denominators, definitions and sources

  1. Counts are employer firms and their establishments in the federal annual statistics of US businesses, 2022, the newest year published, industry 621210 offices of dentists. A firm is every location under one owner. Staff is paid employees across the whole firm in the mid-March 2022 pay period. Practices with no paid staff are not counted.
  2. The file withholds some of the largest size classes in some states. The companies and offices with 100 or more staff are therefore the total less the published classes below 100, so no withheld figure is guessed.
  3. The twelve states shown are the twelve with the most dental practice companies. Built from published federal statistics, counts banded deliberately. Figures of 100 and over are rounded to two significant figures, figures from 10 to 99 to the nearest ten.

The named version of this page, the actual practices inside a row, is built one row at a time. If you want to walk through a row together, pick a time at cal.com/ecg. Prepared by Matthew, matthew@enquirerconsulting.com.
